Jamie Visits

So, my longtime friend Jamie was in Thailand and decided to stop by for a visit. I was so happy to have him come. He arrived on Thursday. He immediately began to experience the joys of Korea when attempting to tell the driver where the college was. Fortunately, he had my number and there was a nice Korean woman in an elevator with me at the time who gave the cab driver directions. They speak even less English here than they do in Busan. We went wandering around town and figured out together where things are. We had some crazy experiences where women hid their faces from us, men turned around and walked the opposite direction and we were almost killed by a crazy taxi driver. This is what's great about being in a country that sees very few tourists and very few Koreans have traveled outside the country. We visited a few of the foreigner bars. On Saturday, my new roommate and colleague took us to a mountain with a huge temple on top. It was snowing! We were cold, but the view was great! Saturday night there was a hockey game. A group of foreigners (Mostly Canadians) have teams and play each other. It was very cold in the rink and we decided to start the St. Patty's Day celebration early. We headed downtown for a few drinks. I got to see all my old buddies from Busan and a few new friends here. Sunday we headed down to Busan to see Robyn and check out the town. We went to the beach and had fun with some fireworks. We ate galbi at a great little place by my old digs. After that we went to a soju bar and then headed back to Daegu. Jamie headed home on Tuesday. I had a great time and I was very sad to see him leave. Hopefully, he will be back for another visit in a few months!

Hey Bert, Thanks for your constant support. A bulgogi burger is a bit spicy. There is something here called bulgogi and it looks like greyish hamburger meat. I find it to be pretty disgusting. As for the people avoiding us, it really is the fact that a lot of Koreans have never traveled and been around people of other cultures. I think the statistic is that Korea is 99.5% homogenous.(The CIA factbook lists it as homogenous except for 20,000 Chinese living here) There are 48 million people living in Korea. When you think of Toronto, which has 100 different cultures living there, you can see how strange it would be for the Koreans having never been exposed to foreigners. I think the 1% of foreigners are mostly made up of other Asian countries. I have a college student in one of my classes, that when I approach him he starts laughing hysterically. Seems to be some kind of nervous reaction. As I've said, sometimes you feel like a movie star. People want to speak to you and look at you. Other times it's just overwhelming. I am happy when it rains because, I can use my umbrella and hide my face and have some peace.

Great post, as usual.  Q: whats a bulgogi burger? Why exactly did they avoid you and Jamie? Is it really as simple as fear of foreigners? Or were you and Jamie just not quite blending --like in an Asian version of "My Cousin Vinnie"?  I can't understand why they would practically freak out at the site of Americans. You know, between the war, the Olympics, our shining example of democracy as evidenced by our "dear" leader, and two million American troops on their soil you would think... oh... never mind.

Also, with persons of the Korean persuasion, is it helpful when attempting to talk Korean to make grand arm gestures to get the point across?  I heard sometimes that works.
